NEWSLETTER 11/24/11

At this time of Thanksgiving it is gratifying to see the increased momentum the Rotary Club of Floral Park-Bellerose is experiencing as we strive to serve those in need. This week we welcomed Mark Reisig as our newest member.  He attended our Club Assembly earlier this month and was active in the club's discussion to take on two major projects.

The first project involves our decision to join forces with the Rotary Club of Franklin Square Elmont to sponsor a Circus in the Fall of 2012.  For over a decade the Rotary Club of Manhasset has run a circus as a fund raiser bringing joy and excitement to children.  We will follow their model including having children 12 and under attend the circus free of charge.  We will earn funds from a percentage of ticket sales, major sponsors, and a journal, and put those funds towards some good causes particularly with a focus on helping youth.

The second project is the result of the NY Blood Center reaching out to us to run a blood drive.  During the holiday season the need for blood is critical so the club has decided to accept the challenge.  It is now up to us to encourage people to attend our blood drive 2:30-8:30,  Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 at the United Methodist Church, 35 Verbena Ave., Floral Park, NY  11001.  Each donor will receive two (2) NY Mets tickets.  Our goal is 75 pints and every pint donated can save up to three lives.  We are also asking that the donors bring food for the hungry which will be donated to The Inn (Interfaith Nutrition Network), Hempstead, NY.  Everyone's support is needed and appreciated.

This week's guest speaker was John Beyer, CEO of Men on the Move, Floral Park, NY.  John gave us a terrific talk & power point presentation about his company.  It is obvious that he is a very sharp business man and he has a passion to help those less fortunate.  Giving is a real part of him.  We were very impressed and all of us should certainly give his firm strong consideration the next time we need to hire a moving company or rent storage space.  Thanks John!!  Don't think for a minute we didn't ask John to become a member of the club.  He would be sensational so we will keep our fingers crossed that he says yes.

Our next meeting on Tuesday, December 13th will have a holiday theme so please bring your spouses/significant others, wear red & green, jolly hats, etc., and be prepared for a surprise appearance.  No, Santa is booked, but we have something else up our sleeve.  The meeting will also serve as our spring board to the blood drive to include Michele McCaffrey from Long Island Blood Services who will share tips on how to round up a big crowd of blood donors.  Hope to see you all, ready to gather round the yule log, at Bruce's Place.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Rich
